Guidelines Pertaining To Plastic Surgery Dayton OH Patients Need To Know

By Lelia Hall

Many people are unhappy with the appearance of a particular feature on their body which negatively affects their self-image. Fortunately there are numerous cosmetic procedures, both surgical and non-surgical which can correct these perceived flaws. When considering plastic surgery Dayton OH patients need to they have a realistic outlook, know the risks, and above all, find a highly competent surgeon.

Disfigurement can occur as a result of an accident or a birth defect, necessitating the need for corrective or "reconstructive" surgery. However, most often the patient is simply displeased with the way a part of the body looks and wishes to have it altered somehow; such procedures are referred to as "elective".

Surgical procedures are more complex, and require the patient to be given a general anesthetic; some common types include liposuction, facelift, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty (nose job), and breast augmentation. Less invasive, non-surgical procedures such as laser skin resurfacing, Botox and filler injections, and sclerotherapy, are usually done in the doctor's office with either a local anesthetic or none at all.

Finding the right plastic surgeon should be anyone's top priority if they are considering one of these procedures. A good candidate will have a minimum of five years surgical and at least two in plastic surgery, which encompasses all types of surgical procedures. He or she must adhere to a strict code of ethics, and operate only in accredited facilities. Furthermore, the surgeon must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

In addition to having a proven track record of competence and satisfied patients, the surgeon must also be forthcoming and open to fully discussing the procedure and any possible risks it may entail with the patient. Many types of plastic surgery involve ongoing, follow-up care so it's important that the patient feel comfortable sharing any concerns which may arise with the surgeon and have questions answered satisfactorily.

All surgery comes with some risk of complications, but this is not something most healthy individuals need worry about. It is legally required however, that a patient be fully informed of all risks, no matter how unlikely, and a consent form will need to be signed indicating this acknowledgement. Patients who have pre-existing conditions such as hypertension or heart disease have a slightly higher risk, and if it is considered too dangerous to attempt the procedure the surgeon will not perform it.

Unless the surgery is being done to correct a medical condition, it is unlikely that insurance will cover the cost, which depending on the procedure, can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Some surgical clinics may offer financing to their patients, and there are also some private lenders who specialize in issuing loans for this purpose to qualified applicants.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes getting sufficient sleep and exercise, eating nutritious foods, drinking plenty of water, and not abusing drugs, tobacco, or alcohol, can ultimately help keep a person looking his or her best for a longer time, and thus delay the need for a cosmetic procedure. One must also keep their expectations realistic and understand that although most results are great, there still remains the slight chance that the procedure may not turn out exactly as anticipated and modifications may be necessary at a later date.
