Sleek Straight Hair With The Brazilian Keratin Treatment

By Joanna Walsh

Variety in hairstyles is one of the ways for people to enhance their appearance and try new fashion trends. One of the more popular ways to make your hair contribute to a new look is to straighten it if it is curly or wavy. With the Brazilian Keratin treatment, people with curly hair can achieve the bone straight look.

The origin of the system is reflected in its very name. The system's creator drew her inspiration from curl straightening methods that she observed in Brazil. Those methods included an intense system of blow drying the hair to remove curls temporarily.

The system that grew out of that involves four steps with a combination of Keratin solution and heat application. Each is designed to add to the sleek bone straight look that results after the process is completed. A kit is provided along with instructions to help users to apply the techniques.

The initiating step in the process is a cleansing action. A clarifying shampoo should be used to wash the hair. The shampoo should be worked into the hair and left on it for about two minutes. After the shampoo is rinsed away a conditioner should not be used. The excess moisture in the hair should then be removed using a dry towel.

The second step is the actual application of the Keratin solution. In this step, with gloved hands, the applier shakes the container with the solution vigorously and then pours a small portion into a bowl. From this bowl the solution is removed using a special brush and is applied to the entire length of the hair beginning at a half of an inch from the scalp to prevent irritation.

After the treatment has been allowed enough time to penetrate the hair, and this usually takes between ten to fifteen minutes, it is time for the third step. This step includes the application of heat using a blow dryer. A round brush or a paddle brush is used to assist the process.

The fourth step in the process is the step that seals in the treatment. This is where a flat iron is used. The kit will provide you with specific directions outlining the level of heat that your hair requires. Denser, coarser hair will, of course require higher heat levels than thin hair. Starting at the back of your head, you should make thin sections in your hair and use the flat iron multiple times along each section. As with the heat level, the kit will also tell you how many times to pass the flat iron along each section. After the sealing step is complete water should not come in contact with the treated hair for about two days.

Despite the magnificent results though, Brazilian Keratin treated hair should be viewed as temporarily straightened hair. This means understanding that treated hair will gradually return to a wavy or curly state. This reverting process is heightened by moisture and chemicals such chlorine and the salt in sea water. Treated hair should therefore be rinsed with plain water soon after it has been immersed in pool or sea water.
